Research - The Society maintains an remarkable archival collection of area newspapers dating back to the 1880s. An extensive vertical file system covers local businesses, families, schools and other local history topics. Our staff can provide research service in locating family history records, home and business records, for a nominal fee, or individuals may make an appointment to do their own research.
Photographs - A large photo collection includes historic images of the people, places and events dating back to the late 19th Century. Images are available for personal and commercial use. Please call to find out more about ordering images from our collections.
School Field Trips to the Museum - Students from throughout the area visit the museum in May for tours and special programming that help them connect with the past.
Bear River Heritage Center - Operated by the Historical Society this building is available for teachers and home school groups to use as a "one room schoolhouse" to create a unique and engaging learning environment.
Walking Tours - The Society offers groups a variety of walking tours including the history of the waterfront, downtown Petoskey, and Hemingway highlights.
Publications - The Society has produced 5 regional history books. These are provided free to the local libraries and schools as well as for sale in bookstores and at the museum gift shop. Authored 2 additional books on the 100 year histories of both the Harbor Point Golf Club and the Wequetonsing Golf Club. Also authored essays for the Historical Society of Michigan and the Michigan History Magazine.
Lecture Series - Provide programs throughout the area on various regional history subjects as well as providing historic fashion shows using donated clothing.

Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians - The Society assisted the LTBBOI in researching Native American records from the Society's Archives and thereby verified claims which enables individuals to join the tribe.
Motorcoach Tours - The Society welcomes tour groups to the museum at the Depot and provides a variety of tour options for walking and step on tours of the area.
Assistance to other non-profits - The Society provides the opening program for the Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Little Traverse series. Assists Bay View Archives by sharing research information and provide speakers or programs for Library week. Provides artifacts for the Annual Zonta Fashion Show. Assists with technical and museum administrative assistance to smaller museums throughout a 6 county region. Provide storage for the records of the Petoskey Art Study Club and the Petoskey Antiques Club.
Artifact Loan - Loan artifacts and exhibit cases to local museums such as the Harbor Springs Historical Society, the Harbor Springs Andrew J. Blackbird museum, the Boyne City museum, the Smithsonian Institute and Holy Cross Museum. Provide temporary exhibits for area hotels and Northern Michigan Hospitals.

Community Events - Conduct community events to help attract visitors to the area. Also assist the Michigan and International Hemingway Society during their weekends in the area.
Assist with Restoration and Landmark Projects - Such as the St. Solanus Indian Mission Church, Cross Village Holy Cross Church and many buildings throughout Emmet County. Provided research for the downtown building plaque and historical signage as well as research for Emmet County registered landmarks.
Volunteerism - Provide opportunities for people of all ages to get involved with the history and helping our 100+ year old museum continue to serve as a vital contributor to our community.
Intern Programs - The Society hosts university interns providing on-the-job experiences to complement their formal history and museum studies courses.
Cultural Plan - Worked with the Crooked Tree Art Center to research and write the Emmet & Charlevoix County Cultural Plan which is recognized statewide as a well developed blueprint for the coordinated implementation of comprehensive cultural programs.
