The Bay View Inn was built In 1886 by John Wesly Howard. It was first called the Woodland Avenue House and then renamed The Howard House in 1888. Later, it was renamed The Hotel Roselawn. In 1935 it was renamed again, and has been The Bay View Inn ever since.
Stafford Smith purchased the Inn in 1961 at the age of 22, making him the youngest innkeeper in Michigan at the time. He and his wife, Janice, ran the Inn until 2024.
