Charles Edson Churchill
C.E. Churchill was the editor and publisher of the Petoskey Evening News, the first daily newspaper to be published north of Traverse City. He was born in Joliet, Illinois on September 13, 1858. His parents were Charles G. and Jennie (Graves) Churchill. He went to school in Ohio and at age eleven worked carrying water to laborers in a brick yard for $1 a week. In 1872 he got a job in the office of the Galion Democrat and worked there until 1875. He worked for various other newspapers in Ohio, Kansas, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
In 1881 he married Margaret Chicotte of Monroe, Michigan.
In 1888 he came to Petoskey and got a job at the Independent Democrat. In 1898 he started a job printing office. He purchased the Independent Democrat with partner Elmer R. Goldsmith, and in 1902 they established the Petoskey Evening News. Mr. Churchill took over completely when Mr. Goldsmith died in 1905.
C.E. Churchill was a Mason, and a member of the Elks and the Oddfellows. He and his wife lived at 510 Rose Street and then moved to 114 State Street on June 1, 1903.
