100 Depot Court |
The depot was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
In 1891 the Chicago and West Michigan Railway began construction on a line from Elk Rapids to Petoskey. The company purchased land on Little Traverse Bay. They hired the Cadillac firm of Mosser and Wilson to construct the depot. In 1892, both the rail line and the depot were completed. The depot is Victorian shingle style with a conical roof and a porte cochere entrance to the road. The Pere Marquette Railway absorbed the station in 1899. It then merged with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in 1947. Passenger trains continued service until 1964. The station fell into disrepair and was restored to house the Little Traverse History Museum in 1974.
