Dr. George Reycraft
Dr. George Edwin Reycraft was born in Highgate, Ontario on August 7, 1874. He was a student for one year at McGill University in Montreal and another year at the University of Michigan. He attended the Detroit School of Medicine, graduating in 1895, and studied at clinics in Berlin, London, and Paris. He joined his brother in Petoskey in the late 1890s. He was the general manager of the Petoskey hospital. Dr. Reycraft was particularly interested in diseases of the eye. Composer J. Will Callahan came to Petoskey specifically to be treated by Dr. Reycraft. Like his brother, he was mayor of Petoskey three or four times.
He was a member of the Emmet County Medical Society, the Michigan State Medical Society, and the American Medical Association. He was elected mayor of Petoskey in 1902, at age 28, and again in 1904 and 1905. He was City Health Officer in 1912. He was a member of several lodges: Masons, Elks, Knights of Pythias, Woodmen, Foresters, and Maccabees.
He died of a heart attack while on rounds at the hospital in 1925.
