Dr. John Reycraft
Dr. John Reycraft was born in Highgate, Ontario on October 4, 1869, the second of four children. His parents were William and Lucy (Risk) He attended Chatham Collegiate Institute and Toronto University. He taught school in Toronto for two years. He then attended the Detroit School of Medicine, graduating in 1891. He moved to Mackinaw City and had a practice there until 1894, when he came to Petoskey. In 1900 he traveled to hospitals in Paris, London. Berlin, Glasgow, and Belfast to learn more about their medical practices. In 1907 he founded the Petoskey Hospital with his brother, Dr. George Reycraft.
He was a member of the Emmet County Medical Society, the Michigan State Medical Society, and the American Medical Association. He was a member of the US Board of Pension Examining Surgeons for Emmet County.
He was mayor of Petoskey three times, and he also ran for Congress. He was a partner in the Perry Hotel, which he and his brother bought from Dr. Perry to use as a hospital. Instead, they ran the hospital out of their home and hired their nephew to operate the hotel. He owned the Petoskey Hospital with his brother, and operated it in several locations.
He was interested in timber conservation and owned property at Walloon Lake to preserve “virgin forest.”
He was married to Miss Metta Cornell of South Bend, IN on March 20, 1902. She died in May, 1902, in Petoskey, of abdominal hemorrhage. They met while she was summering at the Cushman.
He died in 1931.
