Elizabeth Whitney Williams
Born in 1844, Elizabeth was a lighthouse keeper on Beaver Island and Harbor Point. Sorn on Mackinac Island, she grew up on Beaver Island and often visited the lighthouse as a child. Her husband took over keeping of the lighthouse in 1869, and she became the unofficial lens tender. After her husband’s death in 1872, she became the official keeper. In 1884 she applied to be the lighthouse keeper at the newly erected Harbor Point Lighthouse. She served as a lighthouse keeper for 41 years. Her duties included cleaning and polishing lenses, cleaning and filling oil lamps, polishing brass and trimming wicks. In 1905 she published Child of the Sea and Life Among the Mormons.
Elizabeth died in 1938.
