The cannon in Pennsylvania Park is a nine-inch Dahlgren naval cannon. It was cast (No. 249) in Boston in 1859 and used in the Civil War on Admiral David Farragut's flagship, the USS Hartford during the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864. The cannon required a crew of sixteen men and could hurl a ninety pound shell about two miles. It was donated to the city by the Women's Relief Corps in honor of the GAR Civil War veterans. The cannon was dedicated at the park on July 4, 1905.
