Greenwood Cemetery VaultFrom the Petoskey Record, January 13, 1904
The lack of a receiving vault at Greenwood Cemetery is almost criminal negligence. Many a death's cold has been contracted by mourners of a burial being exposed to severe weather. During the last week or two there have been several burials, and it was with the greatest difficulty that the open grave was reached. Then it was necessary to wade through deep snow and drifts to stand beside the grave during the burial to the peril of each and every person. A receiving vault, where the funeral rites could be held, and where the body could be kept until the weather became more moderate, is a pressing need at Greenwood Cemetery. Public agitation can get it. |

It wasn't until 1921 that the vault was constructed. According to the newspaper, it was to be 24 feet by 40 feet, large enough to hold forty bodies. It is made of stone and brick, with metal doors. The cost of the building was $6,000.
Eventually, the cemetery was able to do burials in the winter, and the vault was no longer needed. They traded the property with the county for a piece of property adjacent to the cemetery.
