James Buckley
James Buckley was a Petoskey Postmaster for twenty years.
He was born in Detroit on December 19, 1840, the second of seven children. His parents were Daniel and Ann Buckley who emigrated from Ireland in 1840.
James enlisted in Company C of the Fourth Michigan Cavalry on August 2, 1862 and was mustered into service in Detroit. He participated in 41 skirmishes with the Army of the Cumberland, including Chickamauga Creek and Kilpatrick's Raid. He was honorably discharged in Nashville on July 1, 1865.
He attended Eastman's Business College in Chicago, graduating in 1867. He worked as a carpenter in the summer and a teacher in the winter.
In 1874 he came to Petoskey. He worked as a carpenter for three years. He established the Petoskey Record with George Mosher, but sold his interest in the paper after one year. He was elected Emmet County Register of Deeds in 1878. He operated a hardware store for eight years, then a lumber yard for five years, then a hardware store again. He was appointed postmaster in 1890.
Mr. Buckley married May Rowan on December 14, 1880. Their son, Paul Buckley, graduated from the University of Michigan law school.
He was a member of the city council, a township supervisor, and the mayor.
He was a Mason.
