John E. Walrond
John Walrond was born in Sydney, Australia on May 26, 1849, the fourth of seven children. His parents were George and Mary (Davis) Walrond of Devonshire, England. They moved to Ontario when John was young and he was educated there. He attended Toronto Normal College and was a teacher for fourteen years. He was the superintendent of East Jordan schools for four years.
He married Mary Bowman on July 25, 1877. They had four children: Edith (married George Jesperson), Lorne B., Elma S., and Vera E.
Then he became a bookkeeper at Rosenthal's Department Store for two years and Easton Hardware for nine years. He then bought an interest in the business and became partners with Sidney Bump, operating their store as Bump & Walrond. In 1903 he partnered with Frank Friend to open Walrond & Friend in Harbor Springs.
He served as school examiner in Charlevoix County and supervisor of the fourth ward in Petoskey. He was chairman of Petoskey's special assessment board.
He was a member of the Masons and the Odd Fellows.
