John Keep
John Keep was the Register of Deeds for Emmet County. He was born in Schuyler County, New York on August 12, 1842. His parents were Caleb and Charlotte (Sealey) Keep. He worked on the family farm and attended school in New York until early 1861, when he moved to his uncle's home in Beloit, Wisconsin. He returned to New York to enlist in Company K, Third New York Volunteer Infantry in October, 1861. He mustered out in Albany, New York in 1864.
Immediately upon discharge from the army, he moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he worked as a civil engineer, surveying land for the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad. In 1875 he came to Petoskey, where he continued to work as a surveyor. In 1878 he was elected County Surveyor and served one term, when he was appointed Register of Deeds.
He married Laura Cook on May 13, 1876. She died January 6, 1901. They had no children.
Mr. Keep was a member of the Elks Lodge and G.A.R. Lombard Post 170.
