John L. Ferris
John L. Ferris was born in Rapid Ridge, New York on January 29, 1862. He was the youngest child of Warren and Maria (Van Volkenburg) Ferris. In 1864 he and his widowed mother moved to Wayland, Michigan where he attended school. He became a clerk in a general store. From 1885 to 1895, he ran a store at Walloon Lake. He went to work for the Newton Falls Paper Company in New York until 1902, when he came to Petoskey and operated the Saigeon and Ferris Grocery.
He married Edna A, Olds in 1887. They had two children, Albert L. and Warren O.
He served two terms as township supervisor in Walloon Lake. In Petoskey, he was a member of the City Charter Revisory Committee. On April 5, 1911, he was elected supervisor from the Fourth Ward. He lived at 514 Elizabeth Street.
