John W. Weaver

John Weaver was born in Berrien County, Michigan on October 26, 1849, the fifth of ten children. His parents were Samuel and Caroline (Hunter) Weaver. He was educated in Berrien County.

In 1870, when he was almost 21, he went to Nevada, where he was successful as a prospector. He took the train to Omaha, Nebraska and then Ogden, Utah, where he lived from 1871 to 1874. He then returned to Berrien County for three years.

He married Nelle J. Tew on February 14, 1874. They had four children: Austie, Lenah, Nellie, and Ward.

He began selling cattle, shipping them to both Chicago and Buffalo. After sixteen years in the stock business, he moved to Charlevoix and started a lumber business. He owned farms north of Harbor Springs and east of Petoskey, where he developed orchards and vineyards. The value of his land was $20,000 in 1912.
