The Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad realized that a rail yard in the center of town was not a good idea. They hired a landscape architect to beautify the area. With three sets of tracks, there were over 100 trains daily in peak season. Barbara Waters, Petoskey's first female mayor, saved the park from becoming a parking lot in 1974.
