The Brewery
The Petoskey Brewing Company opened in 1898. Every two years, local residents voted on whether to keep it open. The decision depended on who had the upper hand, the wet or dry forces in the area. "Petoskey Sparkle," the brewery's most famous beer, owed its success to the business' location. According to 1933 advertising "The buildings are located at this point because there is a flowing well of marvelous, clear, sparking water right in the main building; as 90% of beer is water and it is one factor of greatest importance in the brewing of a good product." (Days of Yore, p. 16)
The building known as "The Old Brewery" was first completed in 1898 and was used to brew Petoskey Sparkle Beer until about 1915. The Petoskey Brewing Company was originally owned by Frank and Garrett Fochtman, A. Bremmeyr, and John Zaiger, who was also the brewmaster. Two factors contributed to the brewery's location: Artesian wells on the property and ice that could be harvested from Mud Lake.
