William L. McManus, Jr.
William L. McManus, Jr. was the mayor of the City of Petoskey, owner of the Cushman House hotel, and general manager of W.L. McManus Lumber Company. He was born in Newboro, Ontario on September 16, 1868. His parents were William and Malinda McManus. He grew up in Traverse City and Petoskey, where he attended school. He became general manager of the plant in 1887.
He married Katherine Thomas in Chicago in 1891. They had four children: William, Alice, J. Francis, and Margaret C. Both daughters attended St. Mary's at Notre Dame.
Mr. McManus purchased the Cushman House in 1909 at a cost of $100,000. He renovated and built an addition. The hotel had 150 rooms. He was described as a "first-class mechanical engineer" and he oversaw all the changes to the hotel, including a steam laundry and an electrical plant.
He was president of the Petoskey and Emmet County Improvement Association. He was a member of the B.P.O.E. and the Knights of Columbus.
