Birkett House

William and Elizabeth Birkett and their children Thomas, Fred, Nellie, and Anna lived in the home. William Birkett was born in England in 1847. He came to Petoskey in 1887. Before coming to Petoskey, he was in the lumber business in Montcalm County. William and his brother, Thomas, opened a wood pulp factory on the Bear River. Later, then went into hardwood manufacturing and special furniture. They manufactured chairs, stands, tables, and everything in lathe work- slat bottomed rockers and settees were their specialty.

William Birkett was active in public service. He also helped organize and operated the Petoskey Driving Club which conatructed the race track at the fairgrounds.

The interior of the Birkett house is highlighted with beautiful woodwork- ash and maple. The foyer contains a stunning birdseye maple staircase.
