Mineral Well Park on East Lake Street was originally drilled in 1878 in a quest for oil. Many visitors to the area came for the healing waters of the mineral well, including Vice President Thomas Marshall (1913-1921). He and his family spent several summers at the Cushman Hotel, and he was often seen filling a jug with water at the well to take to his invalid wife.
