Rainy Day Fun in Petoskey
You were all set for a day at the beach, on the golf course, or out on the lake when the forecast turns to rain. Don't worry! We've got lots of great rainy day activities in Petoskey for the whole family.
Crooked Tree Arts Center and Petoskey District Library are both right downtown on Mitchell Street and are great places to visit if you enjoy art or are looking for a beach read for later in the week when the weather clears up. There's a used book sale sponsored by the Friends of the Library, so don't worry if you don't have a local library card. And kids looking for rainy day fun will enjoy the children's section and the Maker Space.
Northern Lights Recreation on the Harbor-Petoskey Road has bowling and video games, plus laser tag and a great restaurant. An afternoon of bowling and pizza will help clear away the rainy day blues in no time!
If there's no lightning, a rainy day is actually a great day to look for Petoskey stones. The fossilized coral pattern (yes they are really fossils of coral that lived long before the dinosaurs!) is much easier to see when it's wet, so looking for them in the rain is the way to go. We suggest looking along the Bear River and near the breakwall if you're close to the museum. And speaking of the museum...
The best rainy day activity (in our humble opinion) is a visit to the Little Traverse History Museum. It's located in the former Pere Marquette train depot right across from the marina office. We have exhibits on Chief Petoskey, Ernest Hemingway, trains, passenger pigeons, and Petoskey stones. Kids love to call people on our 1977 harvest gold rotary phone or attempt to open the huge Bay View safe (hint: there's a prize inside!). Adults might like to play the Grace Hall Hemingway piano, especially the music she composed, an ode to Walloon Lake. And if you're looking for a great place to relax, our covered porch has Adirondack chairs for the grown-ups and games for the kids.
